“Leader of the Pack”

Under the leadership of Mirza Ahmad, Chief Legal Officer of Birmingham City Council (a BLD Lawyer of the Month for April 2006 and Chairman of the Bar Association for Local Government & the Public Service), his Legal & Democratic Services Department has become the very first legal practice in the UK - whether in the private, public or the voluntary sector - to attain the prestigious “Investors in Excellence Award” from Midlands Excellence.

“This Award is a fantastic achievement for everyone at Legal & Democratic Services Department and is fitting recognition for Mirza Ahmad and his staff of over six years of hard work in successfully delivering the European Foundation for Quality Management (EFQM) Model into what they do every day,” said Councillor Mike Whitby, Leader of the Council.

Based on the EFQM Business Excellence Model, the Investors in Excellence Award recognises organisations that retain a consistent focus on continuous improvement across a range of criteria, including leadership, people, partnerships and customer and society results.

The Investors in Excellence Award was achieved following consideration of a detailed 75-page Submission, outlining the processes and progress of the Department over the last six years, together with a thorough on-site assessment involving five assessors from Midlands Excellence.

In addition, the assessment brought more great news! The Legal & Democratic Services Department has also been short-listed, as a Finalist, for three more Midlands Excellence Awards, namely the Midlands Excellence Award 2006, the Corporate Social Responsibility Award 2006 and the Midlands Equality and Diversity Employer Award 2006.

Midlands Excellence Awards are possibly the most prestigious and competitive in the Midlands area and will be presented at an Awards Ceremony with over 1300 guests at the ICC in Birmingham on Monday 30th October 2006.

So … it is ‘fingers crossed’ until then and look out for even more good news!
